Working-Set PRs vs Ego PRs: Which Numbers Actually Measure Progress
Two kinds of PRs
An ego PR is a max-effort single. The bar slows to a crawl, your hips shoot up, someone films it for the group chat. You attempt one every few months, usually on a day you feel invincible.
A working-set PR is quieter. Last Tuesday you benched 80 kg for 8. Today you got 9. Nobody films that.
Both are personal records. Only one of them reliably tells you whether your training is working.
Why a max is a noisy signal
Your one-rep max on any given day is strength plus at least five other things: sleep, stress, caffeine, technique on that particular attempt, and how hyped you managed to get. Strength changes over months. The rest swings daily — an intermediate lifter’s daily max moves around by roughly ±5%. Miss 140 today, hit 142.5 in two weeks: did you get stronger, or did you finally sleep eight hours? A single can’t tell you.
Then there’s the cost. Grinded maxes are the highest-fatigue, highest-injury-risk reps you can perform. One failed attempt can sour a week of training. Powerlifters — people whose sport literally is the 1RM — test it two or three times a year, at meets. The other 50 weeks they train with working sets and log those.
Testing is not training. It’s measurement, and expensive measurement at that.
Why working sets are a tight signal
Working sets happen every session, at loads you can lift with repeatable technique. When 80×8 becomes 80×9 becomes 82.5×8 over six weeks, that isn’t noise — day-to-day luck doesn’t keep adding reps at the same weight for a month and a half. That’s adaptation, and the exact dose that produced it is sitting in your log.
Here’s eight weeks of double progression on bench:

Note the dip at week 6. That’s not regression — you traded reps for weight and started climbing again. Repsheet scores a set as weight × reps and keeps the max as the exercise’s PR, so the app still shows 80×10 as your record until 82.5×10 beats it. Keep warm-ups out of your PRs
The classic way a log lies to you: you ramp up with 60×8 and 70×5, then do the real work at 80. If every set you record counts equally toward records, your history fills with numbers that were never hard.
Repsheet builds PRs from the sets you tick complete — so the lever is in your hands. Complete the working sets that count, and leave your warm-up ramp unchecked: an unchecked set is still saved in the workout (you can see you warmed up), but it never enters your PRs. The record stays made of numbers you actually earned.
Running double progression in practice
- Pick a rep range for the exercise — say 6 to 10.
- Keep the weight until you hit the top of the range.
- Add the smallest increment you have. Reps drop back. Climb again.
The whole method reduces to one instruction per session: beat one number from last time by one rep. A stall is information too. The same top set three sessions running usually means a deload, more food, or a variation swap — not more grinding. And ties don’t count: repeat your best set exactly and the record keeps its original date. You don’t re-PR by standing still.
When to actually max
Two or three times a year is plenty: before a meet, at the end of a block, or when the itch gets unbearable. Maxing is fun, it calibrates your percentages, and lifting heavy things is the point of all this. Just log it as what it is — a test — and go back to collecting the boring PRs that got you there.
